Creativity Can Help With Feelings of Angst
People are Feeling Like Machines
In a study by Deloitte, "angst" describes how people in the workplace are feeling today. This state of "angst" is due to increased competition, increased interconnectedness and constant disruption because of technology. People feel more and more like machines. The uncertainty of our times continues to compound these feelings.
This Leads to Feelings of Powerlessness
This constant push for cost savings and efficiencies causes people to live in a state of "angst" and uneasiness. People are under pressure to always be “on.” They believe their jobs depend on it. Erosion of work/life balance leaves people feeling overwhelmed and powerless.
Workforce Engagement is Low
You’re not alone. Only 13% of employees are engaged, according to Gallop — and disengaged employees cost U.S. companies $450 billion to $550 billion per year in lost productivity.
The Need for a Mindset Shift
For employees to feel less angst in the workplace in this digital era there needs to be a shift from "angst" to creativity, according to Deloitte. Taking on challenges, innovating and pushing boundaries starts the shift.
4500 Americans were surveyed and here’s the sobering reality:
- 51% were willing to risk failure for the sake of innovation
- 41% said potential negative consequences stopped them from taking action
- 49% said they were uncomfortable with unfamiliar situations
- 54% said they were uneasy making decisions with an uncertain outcome
- 52% disagreed with the idea that rules were made to be broken
- 43% liked to know what to expect everyday
We're at a Crossroad
Do people continue to stay in a state of "angst" and watch work life balance erode their health, their families and life as they know it? Or…..do they make the choice to embrace the change that is upon us and thrive in this uncertain times by facing their fears, making the shift from a state of "angst" to creativity.
You need courage to be creative. You need courage to see things differently, go against the crowd, courage to take a different approach, courage to stand alone, if you have to, courage to choose activity over inactivity. ~ Jim Rohn
