Focus and Have Fun This Holiday Season

Focus and fun can go together by putting three guiding principles into action. We will discuss prioritization, compartmentalization and the importance of taking time for yourself.
When you practice these three things together, focus and fun is possible.
Prioritization
Sometimes when we take a look at EVERYTHING that needs to get done we can become overwhelmed. In the past I would go into a state of inaction, tackling the whole thing was simply too stressful and watching Netflix or cleaning the house seemed like a safer solution. This was like putting my head in the sand, hoping everything would just go away. Nice try, avoidance didn’t work, it actually made things worse. The trick; break your priorities down.
Writing down your priorities can stop them from swirling around in your head and make them seem more manageable. It's simple and it works.
Must-Do, Do-Later, Nice-to-do - much later.
Must - Do
Prioritization works when you break the tasks down. What are your “must-dos” on your list? Must dos, are those critical things that must happen to keep you moving forward towards achieving your goals, keeping your job, or fulfilling family obligations?
These critical “must -dos” if undone, people notice and your inaction can have lasting consequences. Must-dos can be those tasks we would like to avoid all together, sometimes they are the most challenging. The bright side, they are also the ones we feel best about when they are done!
Do - Later
Especially in this hectic time, there will be tasks you can put off until the New Year and no one will notice. Your shoulders will feel lighter because you have just lightened your load. Be kind to yourself, we are pulled in many directions this time of year.
Nice-To-Do - Much Later
Maybe you have wanted to clean out your cupboards, de-clutter your closet (or is that just me?). There are lots of things we would like to do that are not essential to get done right now. We don’t suggest these tasks never get done, you will know when the time is right. Once finished, you may wonder why you didn’t do this "nice to-do” sooner. Completing these pesky "nice-to-dos" can be freeing.
Compartmentalization
Compartmentalization is a survival skill. Once you have prioritized what the must -dos are, take your day/week and break it into compartments. Map out the time you believe it will take to complete your ‘must-does’ and ‘do later’ tasks. We don’t suggest you work straight though, break up your day into manageable chunks of time. This will increase productivity.
When you are focused on a task, try to stay focused by turning off your phone and put all your energy into the task at hand. You will find you will finish faster with a better result.
Family Functions
In this holiday time when we are doing so much socializing in a compact amount of time. Try to stay in the moment. You may want to read "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle for more insight into the benefits of being present. Trying to do two tasks at once can lead to frustration and regret. We are not as focused and ultimately not as productive and we may miss memories because we are too stressed and scattered to recognize them.
Make Time For Yourself
At this time of year when we are focused on everyone else, it’s easy to forget to put ourselves in the picture. Set some time aside for YOU every day. Maybe it’s a brisk walk, a work-out or meditation. A wonderful escape and rejuvenation is to mediate while you are walking. Taking deep cleansing breaths while walking can be both energizing and relaxing.
Maybe you intentionally park further from shopping or take the stairs instead of the elevator. It’s possible to make time for exercise when we integrate exercise into our routine with a little imagination.
Have Fun!
Part of taking care of yourself is having fun! I was amazed how people gravitated towards me when I was wearing the light bulb necklace around my neck. I would immediately turn on the lights and people would smile. The red nose would trigger laughter. It’s fun to take the opportunity to make people laugh, and it is the simplest things that can make laughter happen. It’s like laughter and fun is hiding just below the surface hoping to be let out!
This holiday season we hope you have fun with family and friends. At our age, we know too well how fleeting life can be. We hope you enjoy the moments for these moments are the things lasting memories are made of.

Adrienne & Bob
We are digital entrepreneurs who took a courageous leap to start our online business. We have owned an executive recruitment company for over twenty years. The industry is being rapidly disrupted by technology. As a result of the skills we have learned our recruitment business is 100% virtual. Both of our businesses allow us flexibility to work when and where we want and do the things we enjoy.
