If you’re like us, we knew we were living in a global world, we just didn’t know the personal impact this would have. We find ourselves feeling different emotions. We feel scared, overwhelmed, humbled and hopeful, sometimes within minutes. How has your perspective changed?
Right Back to the Basics
Overnight, we have been brought right back to the basics. The material things that mattered don’t matter now. It reminds us of the pain we felt during economic crisis in 2008. We survived it, but the experience changed us forever. The crisis the world is facing today will have a much greater impact.
Our World View Changed in 2008
Similar to now, revenue from our executive recruitment business dried up over night. Back then, we carried large overhead costs. We made some painful, gut wrenching decisions, and was forced to let a team of good people go. That crisis changed us, we evolved with a different world view, vowing to create another source of income. Being that financially vulnerable wasn't an option for us moving forward.
We Didn't Want to Re-live the Pain
We started an online business with no experience and minimal technology skills. All we needed was determination to tackle a steep learning curve, our laptops and access to the internet. We embraced an industry that was growing as a result of the internet. An industry that’s diverse and nimble enough to keep growing in times of global crisis.
Invest This Gift of Time and Grow Your Knowledge
Take this time of uncertainty to learn, no one knows how long this crisis will last. We encourage you to invest in yourself by gaining new knowledge. Similar to the 2008 financial crisis, when we emerge from this difficult time, the world will be forever changed. People have the opportunity to change with it, or be left behind.
Re-imagine New World Possibilities
In a recent Mckinsey & Company a former Managing Partner, Ian Davis says:
"For some organizations, near-term survival is the only agenda item. Others are peering through the fog of uncertainty, thinking about how to position themselves once the crisis has passed and things return to normal. The question is, ‘What will normal look like?’ While no one can say how long the crisis will last, what we find on the other side will not look like the normal of recent years.”
These words were written 11 years ago, amid the last global financial crisis. They ring true today but if anything, understate the reality the world is currently facing.
