Learning New Skills Was Scary at First

When we first started our online business we were afraid we might be too old or too technically incompetent. For decades we had relied on our kids to explain technology.

Our Kids Taught Us About Technology 

Countless times, our kids would become frustrated with our inability to learn simple technical skills . Technical concepts that were second nature to a generation who couldn’t remember life before the internet were sometimes difficult for us to grasp. How could we even contemplate being in our own online business? 

Life Gives Us Wake-up Calls 

Then it happened. Life has a way of giving us wake up calls. This was a big one! Bob had a terrible health scare.  One source of income and endless hours of work to keep our bills paid was taking a toll.  We knew we needed to create another source of income to alleviate the stress we felt every day.

Scary or Not ... We Needed to Face Our Fear

We felt we didn’t have a choice but to get over our fear of technology and commit to learning new skills.  Sure, learning new skills is difficult at times.  It takes time and commitment to move through the hurdles that will absolutely appear.

We All Have a Lifetime of Learning New Skills 

When we stopped to think about learning new skills we realized we had been learning new skills our entire lives. Everything we do now, that seems second nature, didn’t start out that way. Remember learning how to ride a bike, drive a car, tie your shoes? We all needed to practice, fall down and pick ourselves up a few times along the way.

Learning Technolgy Skills is No Different

We have had times when we’ve been frustrated and overwhelmed. At times, we have even wanted to quit.  But then, we reconnect with why we started this journey in the first place, and we keep going. Learning new skills is both difficult and incredibly rewarding all at the same time.

Something Has to Give

We knew if we kept living life the way we were, something would have to give. Whether it was our health, our happiness, our family’s happiness, something would break if we didn’t change. 

Learning New Skills or the Alternative?

It’s funny, learning new skills seemed a lot less scary when we looked at the alternative.  Through commitment and dedication we have learned skills we never thought possible. We now know more about technology than our kids. We use technical terms they've never heard before.  Makes us smile when we explain new technical concepts to our children. Things can change quickly when you decide it's time.
