Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory about motivation and human needs. Abraham Maslow proposed this theory in 1943 and it continues to hold up today.
He believed the needs lower down the pyramid must be satisfied before individuals can move up. It's now understood, these needs can be partially satisfied for a person to advance to the next level.
Five Stages of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs:
1. Physiological
These are biological requirements for human survival, e.g. air, food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, sex, sleep. If these needs aren't met, the human body can't function optimally. Physiological needs are the most important.
2. Safety
Protection from elements such as security, order, law, stability. Most importantly, freedom from fear.
3. Love and Belonging
The third level of human needs is social. This involves feelings of belonging. The need for interpersonal relationships motivates behaviour.
4. Esteem
Maslow classified esteem into two categories:
a) Esteem for oneself (dignity, achievement, mastery, independence)
b) Desire for reputation or respect from others (e.g., status, prestige)

5. Self-actualization
It's about self-fulfillment and personal growth and realizing personal potential. A desire “to become everything a person is capable of becoming”
